When
expectant mothers
are asked about
labour and
delivery, it
soon becomes
apparent that
at the top
of their list
of worries
is that of
pain and fear.
I know mine
was, and sadly
I didn't then
have the knowledge
of what benefits
hypnotherapy
can bring to,
not only the
mother, but
the partner
and baby too.
| Not
only can this
flexible Confident
Childbirth
course assist
you in having
the most wonderful
birth experience,
either in hospital
or at home,
research has
shown that
hypnotherapy
in childbirth
also has a
range of medical
benefits. |
|
 |
Hypnosis can:
- Reduce
the need for pain
medication by reducing
the fear and tension
in the mother by
increasing her
ability to relax
mentally and physically.
- Reduce
the undesirable
effects of medication for mother
and baby, .i.e.
no depression of
respiratory or
circulatory functions
in mother and child.
- Shorten
labour.
- Reduce
the incidence of
instrumental/surgical
deliveries, i.e.
caesarean, forceps,
ventous.
- Promote
a higher APGAR
score.( At one
and five minutes
after birth, staff
monitor the baby's
pulse , respiration
rate, muscle tone,
skin colour and
response. They
are awarded points
for each. The higher
the score the healthier
the baby).
- Shorten
hospital stay.
- Reduce
the incidence of
post natal depression.
- Promote
lactation.
There have been
many studies around
the world that
highlight the positive
effect hypnosis
can have in childbirth.
For example, in
several Toronto
hospitals, it was
found that first
time mothers who
had had four 2.5
hour hypnotherapy
sessions had only
18% need for an
epidural compared
with 40-95% (dependent
upon the specific
hospital) for a
non hypnotized
group; 6.7% caesarean
rate compared with
20-25% for a non
hypnotized group;
an average length
of labour for women
having first baby
of 5.5 hrs for
the hypnotized
group compared
with 12hrs for
the others.
So what
can I expect
when I attend
a Confident Childbirth
course?
The course lasts
4 weeks. Each session
will last approximately
one hour.
Courses can be
taken individually,
or as part of a
small group (up
to 4). Some mums
like to meet other
mums so would prefer
a group session.
The course can
be started at any
stage during pregnancy
with the sessions
being spread according
to your requirements.
The sessions are
fun, informative
and relaxed.
During these sessions
you will learn:
- Self –hypnosis
in and out of
trance, so that
you can take
yourself to a
place of calm
relaxation.
- Personal visualization
to aid labour
and delivery.
- Sensation control.
- Birth plan
for the mind.
To enable you
to manage the
birth of your
baby the best
way for you in
a positive and
controlled way.
Practice in between
sessions will bring
you a sense of
calm and promote
a healthy pregnancy.
As well as preparing
you for a positive
and empowering
experience on the
day itself, the
tools you will
learn will benefit
you throughout
life.
If you join a
course and you've
had a specific
traumatic experience
(for example of
a previous birth)
or a hospital-related
or medical phobia
to overcome, it's
recommended to
address it in one
or more individual
sessions.
